Meet the Maker: Unison Colour

Unison Colour creates the world's finest soft pastels, handmade in Northumberland since the 1980s. Founded by artist John Hersey after years of frustration with mass-produced pastels' inconsistent quality, he began experimenting to create the perfect pastel - supremely soft, highly pigmented, and buttery smooth. Today, over a quarter million pastels are crafted annually at their coach house in the Northumberland National Park, each one made by hand with passion. The name "Unison" reflects how colours within each set work harmoniously together, inspired by how light affects different hues. With nearly 400 colours ranging from vibrant to subtle, made from the finest traditional pigments with minimal binder, these pastels blend seamlessly and remain lightfast for generations. Colours are inspired by Northumberland's fells, forests, and rivers. Now run by Kate Hersey, the company maintains rigorous quality testing - including checking every batch against original colours. Unison Colour represents authentic British artisan manufacturing, creating tools that professional artists and beginners treasure equally.
