Navy Classic Smock

These Classic navy smocks are as comfortable to wear as they are functional and are as unisex as you can get. The timeless cut of a navy classic smock has been around eons. Originally worn by fisherman to protect them from the winds that whipped off the sea around Britain. They were originally made from sailcloth which was great at protecting them from all that mother nature threw at them. The Yarmouth Oilskins iconic traditional Fisherman's Classic navy Smock has been refined to become even more comfortable and functional. In bygone times fishermen would wear them over thick wool jumpers. Cut with a shorter sleeve to stop them from getting wet while lugging their catch. They soon caught on with artists, craftsmen and craftswomen, not only across Britain but the throughout the world. The Classic Navy Smock from Yarmouth Oilskins has a wider open neck and two pockets, made in 100% cotton twill and with contrast taped vents and cuffs treatment. The beauty of cotton twill is that the more the smock is washed the more it becomes yours, giving that lived in look. Made in Great Yarmouth **PLEASE NOTE** this style is based on a traditional fishing smock, worn loose as a protective garment over others. The fabric is non stretch, and it's an over-the-head style so we suggest sizing up rather than down, to allow for ease of movement and dressing Click here for sizing info

I purchased the navy smock (Yarmouth Oilskins) for my partner as a birthday present. My partner had forwarded me a link to a similar smock from another company, but unfortunately that company did not provide shipping from the UK to Ireland. Fortunately I found a nearly identical smock with SGB! I really appreciated that this company ships to Ireland/EU and made it easy on my end (I am currently based in the US) so I didn't have to track it through customs or make extra payments toward import charges. My partner really loves the smock, he's a gardener by trade and has worn it everyday since it arrived and said the quality is really lovely. Many thanks to Dan for responding to my questions regarding shipping and help tracking the package through to delivery. I will definitely look here for future birthday gifts (and Christmas as well)! Cheers

Update 22/10/22 - There were supply chain issues, which can occur from time to time with any business and especially given the whole, 'I want it now', consumer thinking, leaving me deflated. BUT, SGB and Sir Dan did everything to sort it out and the customer service was brill. I was offered an alternative item with an extra goodwill gesture on top, and was more than happy to wait for the original, cherry on top included. Dan kept me informed and updated in regards to the supplier's updates and it was worth the wait.

Good, honest company selling tip-top quality, stylish goods: items that are unavailable elsewhere. I was looking for a jacket that I thought no longer existed until I "stumbled" onto this website. I bought two of them, I liked them so much. In future, I will know exactly where to look.

Meet the Maker: Yarmouth Oilskins

Rooted in the maritime heritage of Great Yarmouth since 1898, this legendary manufacturer has crafted weatherproof oilskin garments for over 125 years from their Norfolk coastal factory. Originally serving fishermen, the merchant navy and agricultural workers, Yarmouth Stores (as it was known) once employed over 1,200 skilled machinists before World War II, exporting oilskins and workwear to markets throughout the world. Today, twenty dedicated craftspeople—many with over 25 years' service—continue handcrafting each garment using traditional methods and original patterns preserved in the company archives. Their oilskin fabrics are sourced from British mills using sustainable natural fibres, hand-treated to achieve legendary waterproofedness that has protected sailors and workers for generations. Each piece is FSC approved, designed for decades of hard wear rather than seasonal fashion, embodying timeless coastal workwear that remains as popular worldwide as it was in the early 1900s.
