Meet the Maker: Walter & Herbert

Walter & Herbert represents 70 years of British eyewear heritage, founded in 1946 when entrepreneurs Walter Conway and Herbert Thorn established Optoplast Manufacturing Company. Their revolutionary PIMO machine transformed how spectacles were manufactured worldwide. Today, Walter's grandson James Conway and Herbert's son Daniel Thorn continue the family legacy, launching the Walter & Herbert collection in 2015 as a celebration of quintessential British craftsmanship. Every frame is designed, manufactured, and tested in England by specialist technicians using striking colour combinations of the finest globally sourced acetates. Frames are named after iconic British figures - Bronte, Churchill, Shakespeare, Pankhurst - with smooth 1940s-inspired contours that are irresistibly tactile. Each undergoes rigorous testing in their UKAS-accredited Liverpool laboratory, exceeding official British Standards for durability. As one of the UK's only remaining true English eyewear manufacturers, Walter & Herbert combines innovative design with traditional skill, creating spectacles worthy of their distinguished heritage and built to last.
