Meet the Maker: Burleigh Pottery

Since 1851, Burleigh has crafted exquisite earthenware using the ancient tissue transfer technique - a 200-year-old underglaze printing method that makes them the only pottery in the world still employing this intricate process. Based at Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent since 1889, this Grade II* listed Victorian model factory represents the last working pottery of its kind in Britain. Founded by William Leigh and Frederick Rathbone Burgess, whose names combined to create the Burleigh trademark, the company supplied church candles to Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral before expanding into their iconic blue and white tableware. Prince Charles's Regeneration Trust invested £9 million in 2011 to preserve this national treasure, where skilled craftspeople still hand-polish each piece and use copper rollers engraved with archive patterns dating back over a century.
